Let them know!

So after you let them go! (back) to school remember to let them know! for knowledge is power, after all, is it not?! Yes, clearly I have watched Frozen way too many times! But this post today is not about Frozen but about education. So while some of us Moms do that happy dance when we ship our kids off to school we need to remember that we, as parents, are the first educators in our children’s lives so we must continue to provide them with the knowledge they need to be good, successful people and above all, in our home, good Catholics. We need to help our teachers with educating our children and vice versa.

My parents, thank the good Lord, took my two year old twins the other day to their house for a few nights to spend time with them and to give me a break from the lovely inevitable double-the-trouble two year old tantrums. This was wonderful for them because they have so much fun with my parents and it was wonderful for my older children so I could focus on each of them for their first week of school. But, being the crazy Mom that I am and wanting to seize the extra time that I had I decided that since the first day of school was a half day I would have my four older children (ages 4 – 8) go through their toys with me so that we could give some to the poor people as well as have a garage sale (for us poor people!). It has been awhile since I have done this. Being a Mom of 8 kids under 8 years old you can only imagine how much crap I accumulate. I was excessive before kids and no doubt I am still excessive. But I must say in the time that has lapsed since we did this together my children have changed so much! The last time we did this it was torture! I would rather have needles poked in my eyes then do it again! My husband would always say I was crazy for doing it with the kids. If I left him in charge they would have one toy and be done with it! I understood him but after yesterday I am very happy I did. To my shock, when I grabbed the garbage can and a bag and said, “Ok kids, let’s do this!” my children jumped right in wholeheartedly. “Here Mom, I don’t use this anymore. Mom, we have two of these, some child would like this don’t you think?” Um…who are you and what did you do with my children?! My one daughter, God bless her sweet little soul, even sealed her toys away with a kiss for the poor people as she put them in the bag! Now granted I got the occasional show me the money! attitude from my oldest as he thought about sitting curb side and negotiating with by passers. But how can you blame the kid for I too dreamed of getting $5 for my knock off Prada bag! The point is that these young little children had learned to joyfully, happily give back…to help out someone less fortunate and that was so rewarding for me to see as a Mom. For a split second I thought to myself, maybe we’re not doing a bad job after all…

All too often Moms are so hard on themselves. They may think, Am I doing this thing (parenting) right? Or she (the other Mom) does it better. Will my kids grow up hating me? But when it all boils down to it our kids love us and learn from us. And the funny thing is they want to learn! They are indeed little sponges! A simple two hours of gathering toys for the poor people was time bonding with them but also teaching them many things but mainly how to serve (others!). Knowledge is power so today, take time with your kids and let them know!

Back to School & The Dreaded Supply List!

It’s that time of year again. As my one friend calls it, “The Most Wonderful Time of The Year!” That’s right we are back to school! Can I get a woot?! It’s that time of year when some of us shop way in advance. The time when others, like me this year, wait until the very last minute to go…back to school shopping.

You could imagine my great dismay when I printed out the school supply list and saw that it was 18 pages long. Now granted were all of those pages for me? No, thank the Lord above. However, it was enough to make this post partum woman tear up a bit. Do I laugh? Do I cry? Neither, I just must forge ahead and get er’ done!

So let me ask some questions though… If one list says large glue stick and another says glue stick are we to assume that the latter is a small glue stick? I fear for my life if I get it wrong. What will the staff say of me if it’s the wrong size? Will the kids pick on my child? Oy… Is it better to buy a smock or actually provide an old shirt? Must the wipes be pop up? I’ve talked to the other Moms and I dunno but I’m pretty sure a 12 pack of crayons was never ever created…just sayin.  Are scissors really allowed at schools still or isn’t that a danger to society? What will you do to me if the pencils aren’t sharpened? What’s the great risk of earbuds, I really want to know?! Did you know what the word perforated meant or did you google it?

OMG! Seriously? Who created school supply lists anyways? :) And why, oh why! can’t we just write one check for ALL of the supplies?! I mean if we already have to buy certain items from the school store why not make our lives easier and just have us by all of them there? It seems logical to me, no? I think it’s because secretly the teachers and staff like to torture us. lol! Did you see the latest Back to School Video where they joke about the supplies? It’s seriously enough to make someone either stay in bed all day or take up (MORE) drinking! Especially for folks like me who currently have FOUR children in the same school. I thought the lady at the dollar store was going to shoot me when she had to ring up 17 antibacterial wipes. Yes, you read that right: 17! Oy vey!

On a lighter note, I guess it’s all worth it, is it not? All that running around to see my children get a good education…and me, some peace and quiet. :)

So, with all that said, I hope you have your supply lists complete and ready to go!

Happy Back to School!

God bless,

JoAnne
